Now that Millennials are enjoying the "best part of waking up" will they ever go back to Starbucks?

Folgers instant coffee is making a comeback, thanks to Millennials.  Yes, you read that correctly.  During Covd-19 Millennials who have traditionally sought out higher-end coffee brands, Starbucks and Keurig, are opting to make coffee at home. (Meisenzahl, 2020)

But one has to wonder why instant coffee and why Folgers?  Convenience?  Cost?  A celebrity endorser?  I'm joking about that last one.  As far as I know they don't have a celebrity endorser.  But given Nathan Apodaca's new fame as an Ocean Spray Cranberry juice spokesperson thanks to his skateboard video on Tik Tok, it's entirely possible I missed something. (Allyn, 2020)

So, what do you think?  Why are Millennials drinking Folgers now?  And will they continue to do so after the pandemic ends?  Or will they go back to Starbucks?  What about you?

Will you take your mom to Starbucks for Mother's Day?

I was intrigued when I learned from an ad in the main news section of The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, that Starbucks has partnered with Oprah to develop a new tea product called Oprah Chai Tea.  It's apparently part of a new push by Starbucks to aggressively grow its tea business.  (Hmm.  No wonder Lipton Tea ran its Muppet ad on the Oscar's.)

The commercial for Oprah Chai Tea, which begins airing on Monday, is sure to draw some hate mail since it includes a same-sex partnership in its exploration of different kinds of moms.  It also mentions that a 25 cent donation will be made to charity for each cup bought.  (It doesn't mention that the charity is the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation.)  You can check it out here now.

The spot also encourages viewers to bring their moms in on Mother's Day for a free Teavana Oprah Chai. (Morrison, 2014)

So what do you think?  Is partnering with Oprah a smart idea?  And will you bring your mom in for some free tea?

Has Starbuck’s missed the mark with its new advertising campaign?

5/25/09

In the beginning of May 2009, Starbucks, once famous for not engaging in traditional advertising, launched a campaign to address an -8% decline in same store sales during the first quarter of 2009. (Miller, 2009)

According to CEO Howard Schultz, as quoted in the Wall Street Journal, “We know from our research that customers are not defecting away from Starbucks; they’re just coming less often or cutting out the occasion”. (Jargon, 2009)

Given that input, do you think this ad makes sense? Does it make you want to go into Starbucks more often?
