Everything old is new again.

3/31/10

This just in – Iconoculture, a trendspotting firm, that tracks online chatter says that many Gen Y consumers are “home artisans”, and are embracing hobbies ranging from gardening to sewing. How retro!

What about you? Do you know anyone born between 1977 and 1994 who knits?

From what I've read in the article, I can say that I am a "home artisan" (born in '84). Ever since I moved out of my parents house, I've had to learn the art of cleaning, and it's been actually fun! There have been times I've jotted down the name of an interesting cleaning product I see on TV to try out around the house. I learned to sew from my mother, so whenever I see a loose button, I'm on it! I think it's great that my generation is getting more hands on. The satisfaction you get from doing things yourself is definitely more rewarding!

I don't see my parents gardening or sewing but I can't imagine with the productivity of people today always being on the run to have time to sit down and relax enough to do the sewing or gardening. But I can see how that might help some people just not anyone I know.

My friend who is 27 sews, she can maker her own clothes, and I see girls in their early 20's crocheting/knitting all the time on the train during my commute. I think it maybe a hybrid of the "do it yourself" spirit that Americans are well known for and maybe reminiscent of times past when you could craft an original piece that meant more than something mass-produced- a la the frustration of shopping at chain stores.
