Are you using your iPhone to buy things, or just to figure out where you’re going?

11/11/10

A new survey indicates that 81% of mobile users are accessing maps and directions, while 76% are checking Facebook, and 67% are banking. Meanwhile 38% of those surveyed said they had not purchased anything from their devices over the past six months.

With mobile advertising set to explode over the next few years (predictions are that it will increase by 48% in 2011) sales are expected to rise significantly. (Loechner, 2010)

Do you think you will be part of this trend? Are you already?

(tried to post before, although don't think it went through)

I'm a iPhone and iPad user and use those devices for all kinds of things. Maps, music, social media, reading books and magazines, watching tv and film, and playing games. However, I have never actually purchased, let alone can I remember the last time I tapped on an in-app advertisement.

I do, however, prefer to shop on sites like Amazon and Gilt through their mobile apps as opposed to their websites. There is something that is just more pleasing about the touch interface. Feels more like actually being in the presence of the product. Amazon I think realized and is trying to capitalize on that insight with their new iPad app, Amazon Window Shop, where the user can casually swipe through pages of randomized products (slightly targeted by category or past purchasing).

I do think that I will use my iPhone to browse for purchases, and I also think that the mobile advertising will influence me to buy products that I would not normally buy. But I do not think that I would buy the products on the device itself, rather I would go to the store or wait until I am on a computer to buy them online. The only things I would buy on my phone are last minute transportation, movie, or concert tickets

I also think that many users will also still prefer to buy them on a computer or at the store, so although I can picture an increase in purchases on mobile devices, I do not think it will increase by 10% by 2011, maybe by 2012 or 2013.

I've been using an iPhone for more than 2 years now, and I've yet to buy a single thing on it. Generally, my online purchases are made from home or the office - I feel more sure of the connection from an actual computer. I know AT&T has received a lot of flak for connectivity and dropped calls. I've had enough problems with that myself that I wouldn't want to invite further "Did my order go through?!" dead-connection issues.

Unfortunately for me, I have a blackberry and they are not website/shopping friendly at all. However, even if I did own an iPhone, I probably would not shop on it. I too, as Karen mentioned would be far to paranoid and wonder if my purchases went through and when connections are bad, find it incredibly frustrating to withhold myself from pressing the "reload button."

i agree with dianne, in that blackberries aren't that great for websites. but even if i had an iphone, i don't think i would ever buy anything. with things like entering credit card numbers and everything, it seems not only tedious and annoying on a phone, but also it seems like it could have errors or not be safe. i'm sure there are very easy ways to tap into someone's phone through bluetooth and get any info you wanted. and with service, maybe it'd drop halfway through the transaction or send twice or something.
the only exception i might make would be ebay… because i know there are really good apps for that, specifically made to do it on the go. i feel like i trust apps more than browsers with things like that.

The iPhone is one great device. But it is ultimately a smart phone. I have an iPhone that I use to make good ole fashion phone calls, text, read the news, see what's "around me"(an app), and use it for maps. I have done some banking as well. I haven't used it to make any purchases however, as it is too slow, connection is not the greatest, and screen is too small. I often have to go back a screen when surfing the web because I fat finger the link and it pulls up the wrong one. I can see though one day using it to make purchases, especially around Christmas time. We live in NYC where living space is small and if you have a spouse making surprise purchases can be challenging. So I may end up doing a little iPhone surf and buy after all.

Being a Blackberry user I have never thought of purchasing anything with my mobile device. If I had an iPhone however, I would probably be more inclined to. With 49% of U.S mobile phone users considering purchasing an iPhone I believe advertisers should target PDAs such as the iPhone and the Android because they have websites specifically designed for them which makes browsing easier. Advertisers also must consider the question: why buy on a mobile device instead of a computer? Although I will not be making any of my purchases on my Blackberry anytime soon I believe advertisers with a savvy campaign can impact PDA users effectively.

As a flip phone user, and a particularly old one at that, I do not see myself being a part of this trend as my phone has no internet capabilities. It barely even has a camera. I say barely because while it looks like it has a camera, it no longer works. I also don't see myself upgrading to a more modern phone unless my phone breaks, in which case I would probably go with the blackberry (if not another flip phone), just because most of my friends have them so I could do cool blackberry things with them. If I did have an iPhone, I probably would not use it to shop online with. Except, like Leslie said, perhaps ebay, where timeliness is involved.

Shout out to Dwight and the Dream Team!

I do not own an iPhone but I do have a phone that has all the capabilities of an iPhone. So would I purchase anything? No. I do everything else on this phone, like mapping, Facebook, etc. But I cant see my self purchasing an item where I would have to input my card number and personal info on my mobile devise. I mean I do it on the computer but there is just something a little scary about doing it on my phone. What if I lose my phone? That information might still be in my phone. For some reason, I just would not feel comfortable purchasing anything off my phone.

I have never bought anything on my phone except music. The only reason I've done that is because it's more of a small, impulse buy and I know that I can download it directly or just wait for my computer to download it. I don't feel very safe about buying things on my phone because of so many factors and uncertainties. I know my phone doesn't have the best reception and the internet can be kind of slow so it's just easier to wait and get whatever it is online or in a store. Even online shopping can be somewhat uncertain because of needing to check and make sure everything is exactly right and you only click exactly once.
